Newfoundland Days Icebergs and Ugly Sticks

Day 7 and 8

Well this was an adventure. We went into Walmart and the grocery store and had some trouble getting the steps to retract. Well good thing we stopped at the Visitor Center in Gander because the bolt under the steps broke making it impossible to retract the steps. Needless to say we figured our trip might be over but the helpful women in the visitor center pointed us to an RV dealer who I called and he pointed me to a mechanic ½ an hour away. Colin at Competitive Edge was wonderful.  He put in a new bolt.

So we made it to Dildo Provincial Park south of Twillingate where the rangers were funny and the site beautiful. We abut the water with a few ice bits as they call the little ones.

Thursday, day 7 was raining but we went touring around and saw some great icebergs. That was until I went into a café to see if I could get Internet and fix my Gmail connection, which I did. This was also home to Iceberg Quest. Elliott and I almost talked ourselves out of going on a boat tour figuring we were seeing icebergs but after looking at the pictures we figured we didn’t come all this way to save $100 so we are off tomorrow at 1:00.

We headed around looking for rock formations but didn’t have much luck so stuck with icebergs. We got tickets for Split Peas, which is a local entertainment show and we made reservations for tomorrow night at Around the Circle Dinner Theater, where we both chose lobster for $5.00 more ($40 each). We are looking forward to all this because we are often too lazy but heck, this IS Newfoundland. The girls have been great. Very little barking and they do whatever we tell them. Love them so much.

Split Peas was WONDERFUL – five stars, highly recommended. I danced with one of the “mirmers” people who dress up and go door to door for tea and biscuits at Christmas time and Elliott used an “ugly stick.” I have all this on my camera. We also WON a CD!! That was so cool.

June 20

We learned that so many places give discounts for seniors so when we pulled into Dildo Provincial Park I asked and sure enough we both got discounts. I guess if one in your party is 65 we both get them. We headed to Iceberg Quest and though it was a bit foggy went out. We had trouble getting out because we were “iced in” but followed a fishing boat that went through everything!

The icebergs are awesome. They are 10,000 years old. Some have brown streaks – prehistoric dust and the blue is ice melting and freezing. 90% of them is under water. One went down 300 feet! We were told that there was Plan A B and C for getting back in because the ice moves around and sure enough we couldn’t get into our dock or plan B’s but we were able to get to Plan C and someone came for the 4 drivers (There were only 10 of us) and in just a few minutes picked us up.) The whole thing was superb.

It was late at that point so by the time we got back we only had an hour or so to get ready for Around the Circle Dinner Theater.  We started with yummy large lobsters. I felt a bit rushed because we had to finish before the show but dinner was thoroughly enjoyable. We sat with our “friends” Walt and Jean” The show:  Slapstick at its best – or worst but the really funny part was that we laughed!! Doesn't compare to Split Peas but the whole thing was enjoyable- a good Newfoundland experience emphasis on the LAND.

I am writing this on Saturday. We are planning on going to something that is #1 in Trip Adviser and then coming back, packing up and heading to St. John’s so we don’t have so much driving to do . The sun isn’t out and there is nothing really that we missed. Hopefully the sun will come out.

June 21, 2014

After thinking about leaving this afternoon we decided against it and Elliott will do a lot of driving tomorrow. We went over to Prime Berth Fishing Museum, which was fun but not number 1 on Trip Adviser fun. I got an ugly stick ornament that we will use as our Twillingate bell and two postcards. Dave offers guided tours and he takes people out cod fishing but we just did a self-guided tour for $5.00.

We headed over to the Cozy Tea Room and Bakery, which has Brewis but only on Fridays. That is local very hard bread, which can be mixed with cod or served with cod. In any case I got a yummy biscuit with butter and cheese and Elliott got the pea soup (meat) with a giant dumpling and we both got tea. It was a nice stop.

We did some planning for our next stop, which is Blue Fin in Holyrood around 7:00 the next day, which was June 22.

We picked a great campsite, met our very nice neighbor, have an amazing view of the lake AND THE SUNSET!! WOW! So all is good with the world.

The sunset!!!
